When we talk about corrective maintenance, it is understood that the machine has broken down and that the intervention is intended to restore the unit to its proper state. This maintenance can be coupled with preventive maintenance. There are two types of corrective maintenance:

The curative corrective maintenance

The latter aims at the complete repair of the installation or machine, silohopper or conveyor, following identification of the problem without disturbing the process or the use of the system linked to this machine.
For example a broken car wiper motor will not prevent from driving. A curative maintenance will aim to replace the failing motor by a new motor to solve the problem definitely.
In an industrial environment, it could be a dust collector whose suction rate would be reduced due to clogging of the filters. This will not prevent the process; there may just be more dust and deposits due to the lack of vacuuming. The curative corrective maintenance would consist in replacing the bag filters in order to give the machine its initial vacuum in order to fulfil its task at 100%.

The palliative corrective maintenance

The palliative corrective maintenance occurs when a major or a blocking problem has been identified. Here, the objective is to temporarily repair the defect in order to restore the use of the equipment before curative maintenance or preventive maintenance.

A garden hose that leaks due to a hole and that greatly reduces the flow of water would be temporarily repaired by winding adhesive tape around the leak in order to overcome the problem on the moment.

In order to prevent a new leak, the curative and preventive maintenance to be carried out would be to replace the pipe or to reduce its length up to the leak in order to obtain a perfectly sealed pipe.
The solution would initially be to temporarily reattach the strip in order to be able to reuse the conveyor. In a second step, during a curative maintenance operation, the problem can be permanently corrected by the complete change of the strip or a repair by vulcanization of the latter.
In the industrial sector, a conveyor with a torn out belt would prevent the use of the conveyor belt. The solution would initially be to temporarily reattach the belt to be able the use the conveyor again. In a second step, a curative maintenance intervention will permanently solve the problem by replacing the belt or a repair by vulcanizing.

In these two cases we must first identify or locate the problem. Secondly, it will be necessary to put in place a solution on order to continue the task. There are two main phases: the diagnosis: the identification of the problem (cause, effect, solution) and the repair.
